Chris Bennett FCIOB FFPWS MCIArb MPWA FRSA MAPM

Chris is the founder of Heathside Consultancy.  The main focus of his professional experience and expertise is around dispute resolution.

Chris is a Chartered Construction Manager specialising in client’s representative project management; a Commercial Mediator specialising in construction contract dispute resolution; a party wall surveyor working under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996; and an expert witness in boundary disputes.  Chris also works as a consultant Investigator for the Chartered Institute of Building for compliance of its individual members, building consultancies and companies to its Bye-Laws and Rules and Regulations of Professional Competence and Conduct; and is a consultant advisor to, the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors providing advisory support to industry professionals and members of the public.  He also mentors surveyors through their professional body membership progression.

Chris’s proven working style is one of championing the highest standards of equitability, integrity, confidentiality and continuing professional development.  Above all he is pragmatic, commercially minded, and solution focussed, and holds high regard for rational explorative joined-up thinking that’s ‘outside the box’.  He has extensive experience of heading collaborative teams and commercial entities.

Professional experience:

Within the construction industry there isn’t much that Chris hasn’t done or had some involvement with.  London born and bred, his experience in the industry has spanned 4 decades and 3 recessions!  He started working life as a self-taught carpenter and multi-trader working on many diverse construction projects in London (at that time you could sometimes have found him knee-deep in mud at the bottom of a trench) – and quickly rose to site and contracts management working mainly within the commercial refurbishment sector.  He then formed and managed various construction companies – all successful design and build companies specialising in complex hi-tech bespoke new-builds and refurbishments – and a Central London Chartered Building Consultancy specialising in project management, dispute resolution and neighbourly matters.

Chris is a perceptive ‘people-person’ with highly developed interpersonal skills and innate aptitude and attributes for successful dispute resolution.  He relishes a challenge and is often brought into complex construction projects to troubleshoot.  As an investigator his approach to research and analysis is forensic by nature.  His diverse experience arising from a site-based trade background, and throughout all tiers of management, means that his bullsh** radar is extremely finely tuned!

Professional registration bodies, associations and health and safety certification:

Chris is a Chartered Construction Manager, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, a chartered Member of the Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors, a Member of the Party Wall Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Member of the Association for Project Management, and holds accreditations in Commercial Mediation and an HSE white ‘Professionally Qualified Person” CSCS photo card.  Chris set up and was the inaugural Chair of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors’ Central London Forum – a physical forum that discusses recent case law, best practice, and provides continuing professional development to party wall professionals through education.  Chris is also qualified as a ‘Third Surveyor’ enabling him to resolve disputes between party wall surveyors or their appointing owners, and is a member of the Pyramus & Thisbe Club, a learned society that drives good practice in party wall matters and who were instrumental in the development of Party Wall etc. Act 1996.

Chris however, considers his greatest qualification to be his decades of experience at the front line in the application of bricks, mortar, concrete, timber, steel and mud… not forgetting the mud!
